At Northwest Dentistry in Charlottetown, we use digital X-rays (including panoramic imaging when appropriate) for efficient, detailed images and a smooth visit.

What Dental X-rays Can Show

Types of Dental X-rays We Use

Bitewing X-rays
Show the upper and lower back teeth biting together—ideal for spotting decay between teeth and monitoring bone height.

Periapical X-rays
Focus on a single tooth from crown to root tip to evaluate roots, surrounding bone, and infections.

Panoramic X-ray (as needed)
A broad view of the jaws, teeth, and surrounding structures—useful for wisdom teeth, jaw joint screening, and overall assessment.

Are Dental X-rays Safe?

Yes. Digital X-rays use low radiation doses and are considered safe. We also follow strict safety protocols to minimize exposure:
Use of digital sensors and modern equipment
Lead aprons and thyroid collars when appropriate
X-rays taken only when clinically necessary, based on your health history and risk factors
Pregnant or may be pregnant? Please tell us. We can adjust timing and use additional precautions.

How Often Should I Have Dental X-rays?

It depends on your individual needs. We recommend X-rays based on the following:
Your dental and medical history
Findings at your exam
Symptoms (pain, swelling, sensitivity)
Your risk level for decay or gum disease
Age and stage of dental development
Typical guidelines:
New patients: A set of baseline images (often a full-mouth series or equivalent views) to understand your current oral health.
Regular checkups: Bitewing X-rays once every 12–24 months for low-risk patients; more frequently (6–12 months) if you’re at higher risk for cavities or gum changes.
Targeted views: Periapical or panoramic images are taken only as needed for specific concerns.
