Root canal therapy is a highly effective dental procedure designed to save a tooth when the nerve (pulp) becomes infected or damaged due to decay, trauma, or other dental issues. The goal of this treatment is to remove the infection, restore the tooth’s function, and preserve its natural structure, helping you maintain a healthy smile without needing extraction.
Many patients assume that a problematic tooth should be removed, but extracting a tooth can lead to adjacent teeth shifting, bite problems, and additional costs over time. Root canal therapy is the preferred solution because it addresses the source of pain and infection while keeping your natural tooth intact.
Root canal therapy is highly successful, and with proper care, treated teeth can last a lifetime. On rare occasions, retreatment may be required if new infections develop.
You might require root canal therapy if you experience any of the following:
Root canal treatment may be necessary due to:
Root canal therapy usually takes one or more appointments and can be performed by a dentist or a specialist known as an endodontist.
Step 1: Numbing and Isolation
Your dentist will numb the affected tooth and place a rubber dam around it to keep it dry and free from saliva.
Step 2: Cleaning the Tooth
A small access opening is made in the tooth, and specialized root canal files are used to remove the pulp, nerve tissue, bacteria, and any decay.
Step 3: Filling the Tooth
After thorough cleaning, the tooth is sealed with medicated materials. Depending on your treatment plan, either a temporary or permanent filling will be placed at this stage.
Step 4: Final Restoration
At a follow-up appointment, usually about a week later, the inside of the tooth is completely filled and sealed. Most teeth that undergo root canal therapy require a crown (cap) to protect the tooth from breaking and restore its full function.
Post-Treatment Care
Mild sensitivity may persist for a short time after treatment, but this typically subsides as the tooth heals. Following your dentist’s care instructions, maintaining good oral hygiene, and attending regular dental check-ups are essential for the longevity of your treated tooth.
